Finding dead fish along a shoreline can be alarming, but it is usually impossible to identify the cause from one photograph.

Low dissolved oxygen is a frequent cause of pond fish kills. The reason oxygen became too low may involve dense algae or vegetation, several cloudy days, a bloom or plant die-off, excessive organic matter, hot weather, high fish biomass, or rapid mixing of oxygen-poor deep water. Pollution, disease, parasites, temperature stress, and other causes must also remain in the diagnosis.

One dead fish or a larger event?

An occasional dead fish can result from natural mortality, spawning stress, angling injury, predation, or other individual causes. Multiple fish dying over a short period—especially several species or size classes—deserve closer attention.

Look for clues

  • Which species and sizes are affected?
  • Are fish piping or gathering at the surface, particularly near sunrise?
  • Did the water recently change from green to brown, gray, or clear?
  • Were there several hot, cloudy days, a strong storm, or heavy cool rain?
  • Was vegetation recently treated or did a large amount die?
  • Could runoff, fuel, pesticides, manure, or another contaminant have entered?

Photograph the pond and affected fish, record the date and recent weather, and measure temperature and dissolved oxygen promptly if suitable equipment is available. Diagnostic samples are time-sensitive; contact an appropriate fisheries professional or agency before collecting or preserving specimens.

Steward’s Tip Do not assume a chemical application or “turnover” caused the event without supporting evidence. Several different processes can produce similar symptoms.

Every fish kill leaves clues. Learning to recognize them is the first step toward understanding what happened.
